detect if a game is running

I have written a vb6 toolbar using getcursorpos + timer, the program works fine but while a game is running, the toolbar shows blinks on screen while some games are running, i've partially solved the problem by using a sysinfo control and hide the toolbar in the displaychanged event for resolution that are not that of the desktop, still some games run on resolutions like on the desktop and this is where the blinking toolbar problem of mine exists, i'd like to know if you know a general "detect if a game is running" solution, maybe detect if the running app uses directx? etc. i do not want a solution that detects process of game if running...
